The original building was constructed in 1911 and is Listed Graded B. In October 2001 a major fire destroyed the roof and top floor while the lower floors were damaged by water used to fight the fire.
The redevelopment involved retention and reinstatement of the original stone facades and reinstatement of the original slated pitched roofs. The original interior structure is completely replaced by a modern building, providing research and teaching laboratories with offices and social accommodation constructed within the retained facades and reistated roof profile.
A Central Circulation Space with a fully glazed rooflight provides a light and attractive central focus within the building. Secondary Shared Support Laboratories are grouped in two core areas along each side of the Central Circulation Space, with views into it. The open-plan Primary Laboratories are located between the Secondary Shared Support Laboratories and the external walls, with views to the outside.
