Project Description
The 27,000m2 of new build on four levels for the Western General Hospital comprises, level by level.
A. Stores, Laundry, Medical physics & Out Patients.
0. Main entrance, Day Surgery, Day Treatment, Cardiac & ECG labs & Metabolic unit.
1. Wards - Acute medicine for the elderly, Respiratory & Cardiology, On Call, Stroke & Coronary Care.
2. Wards - Urology, Theatres, High Dependency Unit & Department of Anaesthetics.
Departments at all levels are accessed from hospital streets served by lifts and stairs. The new building is also linked to adjoining buildings on all levels. The University of Edinburgh has a presence within all named Departments.
The building is steel framed, metal clad and constructed in a repetitive 'L' shaped grid. The works were officially commenced by the Scottish Office Health Minister, Sam Galbraith, on 10th December 1998.
