Historic Project: G A Boswell’s Home (1932)

White House of Milliken

BMJ founder George Boswell used his design skills on more than just public buildings in the Glasgow area. In the 1920s, he put his creative mind to work to design his own home near the town of Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire.

The Milliken manor house was a landmark in town, built in 1741 by the Milliken-Napier family and was continually inhabited even after being destroyed by a fire in 1801 and rebuilt years later. The house changed hands several times by the time Mr Boswell bought it in 1921.

Upon buying the property, Mr Boswell demolished the old house and built a new estate with much of the original stone materials. The house, designed in a Georgian style, was named the White House of Milliken, and extends nearly 132 acres in rich parkland.

Today, a stone edifice of the Milliken-Napier arms is all that remains of the original mansion house.
