Meet and Greet at the Beatson

Meet and Greet at the Beatson

Following the amalgamation of two charities to form the Beatson Cancer Charity (BCC), BMJ Architects was commissioned to design a new Fundraising Hub space for them on the Gartnavel Hospital Campus in Glasgow. The NHS gave the BCC part of an existing double height waiting room to develop this space. The new BCC Hub comprises of a Meet and Greet space at ground floor with a small meeting space directly above on the first floor.

The charity was keen to increase its presence, promote the work it does on the campus and encourage staff, patients and visitors to visit at the new meet and greet space located on the edge of an entrance route into the Tom Wheldon building. The meet and greet space has a large glass screen that faces a main waiting room, opening up vistas between both spaces.  It accommodates a small reception desk and relaxed meeting chairs.

A new striking timber slatted wall that incorporates the BCC branded colour, was designed to simplify the room’s internal geometry and subtly reflect the heart brand of the charity. Designed to be viewed from various points in the reception/waiting room space it was broken to accommodate sight lines from seated to standing. The reception desk was designed as an extension of the wall. A deep extruded plasterboard ceiling with a simple legible shape sits back from the existing walls.

The project was nominated for a GIA Award 2014 in the Small Works Category.
