Imperial College Data Science Institute (DSI) Hub

BMJ Architects has just completed the £1.5m ground floor refurbishment of The William Penny Building for Imperial College London creating the college’s new Data Science Institute (DSI) Hub.   The Hub is designed to act as a collaborative workspace for DSI and its national and international partners, which include KPMG.

The DSI aims to become world renowned for research in and across the core technologies that are driving the Big Data revolution. It will focus on research themes in data science and technology that are new and/or difficult for individual departments to pursue independently due to their unique cross-departmental nature.

The Hub space includes an open plan research laboratory, a visualisation studio, offices, meeting & seminar rooms, breakout and support spaces with a state of the art IT system that projects images onto the building’s glass façade.

To ensure the DSI Hub is visible along the existing walkway, set focal points were created, including the projected volume of the Director’s office, the construction of an external canopy and the replacement of the existing paving slabs in front of the entrance area. The use of manifestations and projections on the new glazing to the South further animate the public façade of the Hub.
