Approach

We were appointed by Arklet Housing Association, who were in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council to deliver a new unique housing complex in Cambuslang near Glasgow.

The apartment complex houses 12 long-stay patients from Kirklands Hospital in Boswell and aims to give them a better quality of life by proving an independent but caring environment.

The needs of each resident required the architecture to be physically robust, single storey, barrier free throughout and non-institutional, and in order to minimise future maintenance costs long-life products and materials are utilised throughout the development.

The design features 3 courtyards with 4 flats in each. Each flat is designed as a private home consisting of private patio areas, one large bedroom, a large lounge and a fully equiped kitchen and bathroom. The courtyard areas are connected by a corridor and incorporate staff sleep over accommodation which allows staff to care for the needs of the residents efficiently.
