ICTEM Basement Refurbishment

The establishment of a new and exciting BSc course in Medical Biosciences created the requirement for a new teaching laboratory. BMJ worked alongside Imperial College to carry out the refurbishment of the basement within the ICTEM Building at the College’s Hammersmith Campus. The 220 sqm vacant shell and core space of BX2 was identified by the Faculty of Medicine as the most suitable space with the capacity to fulfil the future teaching requirements. The proposals required the fitting out of shell space to create this area to allow students to develop the pure scientific rigour, skills and analytical ability required to succeed in a changing world.

The new layout was designed to encourage students to engage with lecturers and to ensure that the new curriculum remains modern and relevant and allows students to reach their full potential. A key challenge of the project was to avoid any disturbance to the MRI Suite adjacent as well as the coordination of services in a very restrictive space. The main teaching laboratory supports state-of-the-art audio visual equipment for 42 students and includes support space consisting of storage, tissue culture and prep laboratories.
