New Birthing Suite

Chelsea & Westminster is one of the most modern teaching hospitals in the UK with a desire to redesign its birth centre to improve the choice and experience for mothers and babies. The seven individual ensuite birthing suites feature specially designed mood lighting that can be individually controlled by the patient. Four of the rooms also incorporate birthing pools. The introduction of state-of-the-art lighting in the public areas creates the calm atmosphere of a spa.

The philosophy of the design allows active births in a non-clinical, informal environment with clinical requirement for medical gasses and equipment kept to a minimum and concealed in bespoke cabinets. The cabinets also conceal beds that can be produced if and when required. Our team worked closely with specialist suppliers to develop the ideas for the cabinet joinery and the birthing pools to create this state-of-the-art facility.

An additional element to the contract was the design of a patient suite within the adjacent private Kensington Wing. The suite includes an ensuite birthing room with separate lounge, accessed through etched glass sliding doors.
