Project ICE

Project Discription

Project ICE fuses together in a key collaborative partnership, industry, research and clinicians in a global centre of excellence for precision medicine to provide world-leading expertise in brain imaging for diseases such as stroke, dementia and brain tumours. ICE is linked to QEUH’s Department of Neurology building and is home to Scotland’s first 7 Tesla MRI scanner. The first floor houses 4 dedicated neurology operating theatres featuring ultra clean canopies and laser surgery facilities.

This state-of-the-art building also houses Glasgow University’s Clinical Innovation Zone, a 700m2 lettable floor dedicated to biomedical companies, both start up/incubator and established, which facilitates industry collaborations and the development of innovative life sciences technology.

The innovative design focuses on placing users at the centre, facilitating best practice, fostering collaboration and providing flexibility. The Clinical Innovation Zone has already attracted international small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) investment from around the world.

Our design used a ‘best evidence’ approach to inform the design process utilising the best information specific to the project’s objectives available from research, project evaluations, and evidence gathered from the client’s activities. To achieve this, key stakeholders were identified at the outset and prioritised for gathering briefing information.

The rapid evolution of the ICE design required BMJ to consult with several key stakeholders to better understand their clinical and scientific processes to design a sequence led combination of research, study, collaboration and write up accommodation. The ICE building is linked to our new Clinical Research Facility in the adjacent existing Neurosciences Building to allow their clinical trials to benefit from the ICE building’s advanced imaging technologies. This is key in the fight against health problems associated with an ageing population through advanced treatment options.
