BMJ Architects was commissioned by Birmingham University to design and develop ideas for a building to provide flexible accommodation for fledgling biomedical companies to operate and expand, where innovation is promoted by giving entrepreneurs, existing businesses, academics and clinicians the space and support to validate, showcase and commercialise their research.
The new Biomedical Innovation Hub is not only located at the heart of Birmingham Research Park, the building operates as the centralised reception area for the whole park. The rationalisation of the space offers microbusinesses access to a wide range of support services and specialist laboratory facilities. This has created interaction and collaboration of ideas, while generic flexible modular shell space can easily accommodate the future requirements of successfully growing companies.
By designing such an efficient spatial strategy within a and building fabric, fully integrated with a highly efficient mechanical and electrical strategy we have been able to reduce capital and management costs to provide affordable, serviced and managed core laboratory and office space for these new businesses.
