A Modern Workplace for Clinical and Administrative Teams

BMJ Architects designed a new purpose-built clinical office facility at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, creating a 21st-century working environment for NHS clinical and administration staff.

Client University of Glasgow / NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Location Glasgow, UK Area 8,624 sqm Sustainability BREEAM Excellent

Creating a Flexible Workplace for Greater Collaboration

The building provides 1,200 desks and 110 touchdown areas across three floors. It was designed to strengthen working patterns, support collaboration and enable more integrated, cross-functional activity between teams.

Flexible space planning allows the accommodation to respond to changing group and team sizes, helping the facility remain adaptable over time.

Concept and Strategy

The design brief centred on staff wellbeing while reflecting NHS values through the workplace model. Two top-lit atria bring natural light deep into each floorplate through ribbon windows, flooding open-plan breakout and meeting areas with daylight.

These centralised spaces create a caring and reassuring atmosphere, supporting a sense of community and encouraging conversation and collaboration.

A Holistic Design Approach

The project also supported the rationalisation and consolidation of the existing estate, improving efficiency while reducing capital and management costs through more space-efficient workplaces.

A holistic design approach integrates high-efficiency, low-energy building services within a high-performance envelope. Low-carbon and renewable technologies were also incorporated, including photovoltaic panels on the roof. The project achieved BREEAM Excellent.
