A Future-Ready Biomedical Research Facility
Nexus is a joint project between the University of Glasgow and Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute, designed to establish a world-class integrated research facility on the Garscube Campus.
The project will position Glasgow as a global leader in biomedical science, supporting advanced preclinical models, interdisciplinary collaboration and breakthroughs in cancer and chronic disease research, with capacity to expand into other pathologies.
Concept and Strategy
The proposed facility will provide state-of-the-art, future-ready infrastructure, anchoring a Centre of Excellence in Spatial Biology and supporting computational biology, advanced imaging and biological services. By bringing these capabilities together in a single purpose-built environment, Nexus will support more efficient research, stronger data integration and collaborative science.
The scheme includes a major extension to the existing CRUK Scotland Institute premises, connecting seamlessly to the Wolfson Wohl complex. It will occupy part of the existing service yard and adjacent landscaped areas.
Designed for Sustainable Science
Accommodation includes biological services and specialist accommodation, advanced imaging suites, spatial biology and computational biology laboratories, and supporting office, welfare and storage spaces.
The project will be evaluated under the Net Zero Public Sector Building Standard, providing a framework for holistic sustainability targets as the design progresses. At concept stage, the embodied carbon target has been set at 700kgCO2e/m², with a mid-range operational energy target of 400 to 600 kWh/m² reflecting the intensity of science and technology use.
Nexus is also targeted to achieve the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework Gold Standard, supporting more efficient and sustainable laboratory operations.
