Ninewells Lecture Theatre
Flexibility in Community
Ninewells Lecture Theatre required the refurbishment of two existing, 140 seat lecture theatres within the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
Following successful refurbishments of other teaching spaces within the School of Medicine, the University was keen to continue to deliver a design solution that will delight the users and contribute a facility that will provide for a lecture theatre, meeting the flexible needs of the Ninewells community over the coming decades. This recognises the environmental and sustainability aspirations that required to be met along with operational standards expected within the NHS and the University as joint owners of the facility.

This refurbishment combined Lecture Theatre 2 & 3 into one, to allow the facility to be brought up to modern standards of AV presentation giving a more comfortable ambience, sightlines and environment for the users within the Medical Teaching community, Medical Researchers, conferences, NHS Tayside and others, including disability inclusive access. The works comprised removal of the existing dividing wall between lecture theatres to a level just below the level of the concrete bleachers to provide one large state-of-the-art lecture theatre with a seating capacity of 260 including accessible spaces. The existing concrete seating rake structure was retained with new seating, floor and wall finishes, lighting, AV systems and new ventilation strategy to service the lecture theatre.
