Empowering Research Through Space
BMJ Architects refurbished the 28th floor of Guy’s Tower at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital for King’s College London, creating a collaborative laboratory environment for clinical staff and researchers.
The project builds on BMJ’s long-standing relationship with King’s College London, developed over more than 10 years across projects ranging from complex laboratories to student-focused spaces in listed buildings.
Unlocking Research Through Space
Delivered in two phases, the refurbishment supports bioinformaticians and computational biologists working in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust. The space is designed to encourage closer working between scientists and clinicians, helping to accelerate research progress.
Concept and Strategy
The project includes an open-plan laboratory for 60 clinical staff and researchers, together with a state-of-the-art stem cell hotel equipment room. Breakout and write-up areas are positioned close to the research spaces to support collaboration, informal discussion and the free flow of ideas.
Drawing on BMJ’s laboratory design experience, the project creates a flexible working environment that supports both focused scientific activity and a wider culture of collaboration.
