Project ICE, the University of Glasgow’s Imaging Centre of Excellence, was designed to support Glasgow’s ambition to become a global centre of excellence for precision medicine.
Scotland’s first 7 Tesla MRI
The building houses Scotland’s first 7 Tesla MRI scanner, the first of its kind in the UK in a clinical setting. The scanner provides a focus for clinical and non-clinical academic imaging specialists, clinical physics expertise and advanced research activity.
Concept and Strategy
Throughout the design process, BMJ consulted with key stakeholder groups to understand the clinical, scientific and operational processes that would shape the building. The resulting accommodation brings together research, study, collaboration and write-up spaces in a carefully sequenced environment.
The building provides direct ambulatory access for patients and connects to the new Clinical Research Facility, allowing clinical trials to benefit from advanced imaging technology. Its elevation responds to the constraints of the site while drawing inspiration from the imaging function of the 7T MRI scanner, expressed through slice-like architectural elements.
Natural light and transparency are key to the internal environment. Glazed openings align with internal screens in the Collaboration Zone, helping daylight reach deep into the floorplate. Rooflights reinforce this sense of openness, creating a lighter and more connected working environment.

Delivering Modern Neurosurgical Theatres Within a Refurbished Clinical Environment
The project also includes a new theatre suite on Level 1, providing four neuro theatres as part of a wider refurbishment of the Institute of Neurological Sciences theatre suite. This created essential additional operating capacity and brought facilities in line with current space standards.
High-quality materials were selected to support the building’s longevity and positive contribution to the surrounding townscape. The project also included public realm improvements and a new landscaped courtyard.
