Advancing Translational Research
BMJ Architects refurbished the Advanced Therapies Centre for King’s College London, creating specialist laboratory, equipment and industry spin-out space for the Biomedical Research Centre. The project was driven by a clear ambition to expand research capacity while providing the infrastructure needed to support the development of advanced therapies and emerging biomedical technologies.
Laboratories Designed for Flexibility
Working within an existing building, the design maximises the potential of the available space while responding to the complex technical requirements of modern scientific research. BMJ developed a carefully coordinated environment that balances specialist laboratory accommodation with the practical needs of researchers, support teams and future growth. The result is a facility that enhances capability while making efficient use of existing estate assets.
Concept and Strategy
At the heart of the Centre are specialist laboratories supporting immune monitoring, genomics and flexible BSL2 research activities. These core research environments are complemented by tissue culture facilities, freezer rooms, storage and laboratory support spaces that help research teams work efficiently across a range of programmes. Four dedicated ACDP Category II+ laboratories provide enhanced containment environments for specialist activities, creating a versatile facility capable of accommodating a broad spectrum of biomedical research.
Alongside the laboratories, the project brings together office space, meeting facilities and shared support areas to encourage collaboration between researchers, academic teams and commercial partners. The layout creates a strong connection between research and workplace environments, supporting both focused scientific work and the exchange of ideas that helps drive innovation and discovery.
