BMJ Architects redesigned the Birth Centre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, creating a calm, midwife-led environment for uncomplicated births.

Modern Maternity Facility

As a leading teaching hospital, Chelsea and Westminster wanted to improve choice and experience for mothers and babies. The design responds by creating a non-clinical, informal setting that supports active births while retaining the essential clinical functionality required for safe care.

The centre includes seven individual ensuite birthing suites, each with specially designed mood lighting that can be controlled by the patient. Four of the rooms also incorporate birthing pools.

In the public areas, state-of-the-art lighting helps create a calm, spa-like atmosphere. Within the birthing rooms, clinical equipment, medical gases and beds are concealed in bespoke joinery, allowing the rooms to feel more relaxed and domestic when not in use.

Concept and Strategy

BMJ worked closely with specialist suppliers to develop the cabinet joinery and birthing pools, ensuring the design supported both patient experience and clinical requirements.

An additional element of the project included the design of a patient suite within the adjacent private Kensington Wing. This included an ensuite birthing room with a separate lounge, accessed through etched glass sliding doors
