Reimagining Engineering Education
BMJ Architects transformed Level 5 of Imperial College London’s Electrical Engineering Building, creating a new generation of teaching environments designed to support collaboration, innovation and hands-on learning. The project was driven by Imperial’s ambition to provide spaces that reflect the quality of education delivered by one of the world’s leading engineering departments, while responding to significant growth in student numbers and evolving approaches to learning.
Supporting New Ways of Learning
As undergraduate and MSc cohorts expanded, traditional lecture-based environments were no longer supporting the collaborative, problem-solving and team-based teaching methods increasingly central to engineering education. Imperial required spaces capable of accommodating larger student numbers while providing the flexibility needed to support hybrid learning, interactive teaching and future pedagogical change.
Concept and Strategy
Working closely with the client team, BMJ developed a design centred on the student experience. The refurbishment introduced the Imagine, Innovate and Learn Labs, creating adaptable teaching environments that support individual study, group work and collaborative learning. Advanced audio-visual technology was integrated throughout to enable hybrid teaching and connect students across multiple campuses, helping future-proof the department’s teaching infrastructure.
Delivering these new environments within an existing university building required the careful adaptation of constrained accommodation while maintaining functionality and flexibility. BMJ’s experience in higher education and technical learning environments helped transform outdated teaching space into a series of modern learning settings designed around creativity, interaction and knowledge exchange.

A Blueprint for Future Learning
Alongside the technical upgrades, the design focused on creating a more welcoming and inspiring place to learn. Natural materials, timber elements, biophilic features and environmental improvements contribute to brighter, healthier spaces that support wellbeing, concentration and creativity. The result is an environment that feels fundamentally different from the traditional teaching spaces it replaces.
More than a refurbishment, the project establishes a blueprint for the future of engineering education within the department. The Imagine, Innovate and Learn Labs have become hubs for collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving, providing flexible learning environments capable of adapting to changing technologies, teaching methods and student expectations for years to come.
