The Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI)

Accelerating Discovery Through Collaboration

BMJ Architects is designing the Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI) for the University Hospital Southampton campus, creating a new interdisciplinary research centre that will bring together world-leading researchers, clinicians, students and industry partners within a purpose-built environment. The project forms a key part of the University of Southampton’s ambition to accelerate translational research, helping discoveries move more quickly from research environments into clinical practice and patient care.

Connecting Science, Technology and Healthcare

Located at the heart of Southampton’s expanding research cluster, the Institute has been designed to strengthen collaboration between the University and University Hospital Southampton, creating closer connections between research, healthcare and innovation. By bringing together expertise from medicine, engineering, biosciences and data science, the facility will provide an environment that encourages interdisciplinary working and supports new approaches to some of today’s most significant healthcare challenges.

At the centre of the Institute are highly specialised research environments supporting biomedical imaging, advanced diagnostics, engineering, digital innovation and translational medicine. Flexible laboratories, data science environments and shared research infrastructure are carefully integrated with collaboration spaces that encourage interaction between disciplines and support a wide range of research programmes. The facility also includes specialist hubs for imaging, bioengineering, omics research and data-driven healthcare innovation.

Concept and Strategy

The design promotes a culture of openness and collaboration. Shared social and research environments create opportunities for interaction across the wider campus, while the proposed Science Courtyard establishes a new focal point for the growing research cluster. Together, these spaces support knowledge sharing, strengthen partnerships and help create a connected research community.

Sustainability and long-term adaptability are fundamental to the vision for the Institute. Flexible planning, future-ready laboratory infrastructure and landscape-led public realm improvements will allow the building to respond to changing technologies, evolving research priorities and future healthcare challenges. The result is a landmark facility designed to support innovation, collaboration and medical discovery for generations to come.
