A Teaching Laboratory for Translational Medicine
BMJ Architects designed a new Medical Biosciences teaching laboratory within the basement of Imperial College London’s ICTEM building on the Hammersmith Campus.
Transforming Spaces for the Future
The establishment of a new BSc course in Medical Biosciences created the requirement for a dedicated teaching laboratory. BMJ worked with Faculty of Medicine stakeholders to transform a 220 sqm basement shell space into a 42-capacity student teaching facility.
The laboratory was designed to support future teaching requirements and allow students to develop scientific rigour, practical skills and analytical ability within a safe, accessible environment
Concept and Strategy
The layout encourages students to engage with lecturers and supports a modern, relevant curriculum. The main teaching laboratory incorporates state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and is supported by storage, tissue culture and preparation laboratories.
A key challenge was delivering the laboratory within a restricted basement environment while avoiding disturbance to the sensitive MRI suite nearby. Careful coordination of services was required to make the best use of the constrained space.
