Inspiring Learning Beside the River Kelvin
BMJ Architects designed a new school building for The Glasgow Academy, creating a contemporary learning environment that supports both the school’s educational ambitions and the evolving needs of modern teaching. Set alongside the River Kelvin, the project uses light, views and carefully planned spaces to create an inspiring place to learn.
A Riverside Setting for Modern Learning
The design makes the most of its riverside setting. Glass-fronted classrooms maximise natural daylight and frame views across the landscape, creating bright, welcoming spaces that help pupils feel connected to their surroundings.
A key driver was creating an environment tailored to different stages of learning. Nursery and primary pupils benefit from separate entrances, circulation routes and outdoor play areas, giving each age group its own identity while maintaining a strong sense of community across the school.
Concept and Strategy
Learning extends beyond the classroom through a series of breakout spaces that support collaboration, informal teaching and independent study. These flexible areas encourage interaction and provide opportunities for different styles of learning throughout the day,
At roof level, a distinctive tented meeting space creates a memorable focal point for pupils and staff, adding character and supporting the wider school experience. The result is a bright, future-focused school that balances educational performance, wellbeing and a strong connection to place, creating an environment where pupils can thrive.
