BMJ Architects delivered the upgrade and enlargement of the Accident and Emergency Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, recognised as the largest A&E facility in Europe.
Leading Emergency Care at Europe’s Largest A&E
The project involved the conversion of the adjoining Plastic Surgery Unit to expand and improve the existing emergency care environment. Delivered within a live hospital setting, the works required a carefully phased approach to maintain clinical operations while creating additional capacity for urgent and emergency care.
The enlarged department provides a main waiting and reception area, support administration space, an x-ray suite, 21 immediate assessment rooms, triage facilities and a series of nurses’ bases throughout the department.
Concept and Strategy
The design supports clearer patient flow, improved clinical adjacencies and a more efficient working environment for staff. By adapting existing hospital accommodation, the project allowed the department to expand within the constraints of a complex operational estate.
Working in a live healthcare environment required close coordination, clear phasing and careful management of disruption, ensuring the hospital could continue to provide essential emergency services throughout the development.
