Utilising New Technologies and Innovative Ways of Working
BMJ Architects was appointed by Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to create a new outpatient facility at Gassiot House, supporting new technologies and more efficient ways of working.
Concept and Strategy
The scheme involved the refurbishment of the ground floor to accommodate four separate outpatient clinics. An existing external courtyard was also infilled with a glazed atrium, creating a new open-plan reception, café and waiting area.
The reception was designed as the operational heart of the facility. Clear sightlines connect the entrance, self check-in and check-out points, separate clinic entrances and seated waiting areas, helping patients navigate the space more easily.
Enhancing Patient Experience: Thoughtful Design in Outpatient Environments
Colour, lighting and finishes were carefully considered to improve patient experience and support intuitive wayfinding. The aim was to create a more welcoming, efficient and legible outpatient environment for patients, visitors and staff.
Externally, the glazed pavilion provides a high-quality contemporary addition that complements the existing building while creating a more open and inviting arrival experience.
