Supporting Interaction Between Science Disciplines
The Materials & Analytical Sciences Building was developed to support the University of Warwick’s ambition to expand its research capability in materials science, analytical technologies and high-resolution microscopy.
Concept and Strategy
A key driver was the requirement to accommodate high-resolution electron microscopy and analytical research within a busy university environment. These instruments demand exceptionally stable operating conditions, with even minor vibration capable of affecting analytical performance. The scientific requirements therefore became fundamental drivers of the building’s architecture, structure and environmental design.
At the heart of the facility are highly controlled microscopy and analytical environments supported by specialist laboratory accommodation, office space and collaboration areas. Novel anti-vibration strategies were developed to protect sensitive instrumentation from the movement, loading patterns and everyday activity of the surrounding campus, creating stable conditions capable of supporting both current and future generations of analytical equipment.
Connecting Science, People and Place
Equally important was the ambition to integrate the building into the University’s existing research community. The new building physically links back into one of Warwick’s principal campus hub buildings, creating seamless movement between departments while supporting increased interdisciplinary collaboration.
A new entrance, reception and light-filled concourse acts as social and circulation spaces, helping connect researchers, academics and students across multiple disciplines while maintaining the environmental separation required for specialist scientific activity. The result is a facility in which scientific performance and user experience are carefully balanced, providing a resilient platform for advanced analytical science and future research growth.
