Scotland’s First Commercial Passivhaus Project
BMJ Architects designed the Rocking Horse Nursery at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland’s first commercial Passivhaus project and the first building to combine Passivhaus with BREEAM Excellent.
A Safe and Welcoming Nursery Environment
Opened for the new term in August 2015, the nursery provides accommodation for 78 children within the University of Aberdeen campus.
The design carefully manages the relationship between public and private areas. A public entrance, clad in striking panels, sits within a protected private garden, creating a clear and welcoming arrival while maintaining a safe and secure environment for children.
Flexible Design with Passivhaus Performance
BMJ developed the design in close collaboration with stakeholders, enhancing flexibility within the space and allowing capacity for future growth.
The Passivhaus strategy minimises environmental impact while creating a stimulating and natural learning environment. The building uses superinsulation, airtightness and solar gain to retain energy generated by children, staff and equipment, reducing heating demand by up to 75 to 90%.
Additional sustainability measures include energy-efficient lighting and appliances, rainwater recycling and grey water use for toilets.
