BMJ Architects designed the Data Science Institute within the William Penney Laboratory at Imperial College London’s South Kensington Campus.
A Hub for Collaborative Data Science Research
Located at the heart of the campus, the space accommodates more than 50 researchers and collaborators. The vision was to create a world-renowned Big Data research institute, supporting research into the core technologies driving the Big Data revolution.
The Data Science Innovations Hub focuses on research themes in data science and technology that are new, complex or difficult for individual departments to pursue independently due to their cross-departmental nature.
Concept and Strategy
The accommodation includes an open-plan research laboratory, Data Observatory, offices, meeting and seminar spaces, breakout areas and the DSI Visual Corridor. A state-of-the-art IT system supports activity throughout the facility.
The Data Observatory is a data visualisation studio designed as an immersive decision-making space. It enables multi-dimensional presentation of data and analysis, allowing decision-makers to participate in analytical exercises and translate findings into implications and actions.
The DSI Visual Corridor is integrated into the William Penney façade along the Sherfield walkway, one of the main pedestrian routes through the campus. It is used to communicate the work of the Data Science Institute, promote engagement and share significant College news and events.
